The Jaguars Cap Off Senior Night With A Win

Friday night opened up with Cedar Shoals seniors walking across the football field to the applause of the Cedar faithful. The 10 Jaguar seniors represented the team as captains and left Waters- Wilkins Stadium for the final time in their high school careers with a win, a feeling these seniors had only felt 8 times before. Cedar shut Apalachee out and won 29-0.

The Jaguars took an early 7-0 lead mid first quarter to open up scoring thanks to sophomore Jerphari Colbert and followed up with 6 more points in the 2nd quarter after a touchdown from senior Greg Smith and a missed PAT. In the second half CSHS punched it in two more times, the second from Colbert and the next from sophomore Jaivanni McDavid. The CSHS team got 8 points each opting for the two point conversion on both.

This CSHS team looked downright impressive, and the small mistakes that plagued this football team all but disappeared.

“The six inches between our ears is where we are losing games, it’s not from a lack of effort and I don’t think it’s from a lack of want, It’s just that we have to eliminate the mental mistakes,” said Coach Scott Wilkins early in the season after the error-plagued loss against Clarke Central.

After the Apalachee game Coach Wilkins says that the team has progressed in this area.

“We’ve seen improvement and we’ve seen continuous improvement. We’ve gotten better at recognizing and executing.”

Defensively the Jaguars dominated Apalachee. They only let the Wildcats offense into scoring position a few times and each time came up with defensive stops or forced a turnover to prevent any real scoring threat. Junior safety Quenjarvis Hall was a major contributing factor to the Jaguars defensive dominance. He had three consecutive tackles in the 4th quarter to prevent any chance of an Apalachee comeback, one on punt coverage and then two more on first and second down, and he finished the game with 9 tackles.

On the opposite side of the ball senior athlete Greg Smith had his best game of the season, leading the team with 161 all purpose yards (85 rushing and 76 receiving). He also had one of the team’s’ four touchdowns, the other three were punched in by sophomore dynamic duo McDavid and Colbert. Colbert had two touchdowns on 73 rushing yards and McDavid had one touchdown on 43 rushing yards and 38 receiving yards.

The Jaguars’ victory closed out their home schedule to improve to 2-7 on the season. The Jaguars will look to close out their season on a two game win streak Friday November 6th at 7:00 at Salem High School.
