Hosting Homecoming

Homecoming is important to many high schoolers, but many only think of who they’re going with or what they’re going to wear. However, behind the scenes, Student Government Association works hard to set it up for others.

SGA meets weekly in the weeks before homecoming to plan. They hold a vote out of a pool of themes and then elaborate on the decorations. This year, SGA decided on the theme “The Great Gatsby,” referencing the Roaring 20s as depicted in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel. This theme allows SGA to think of a range of ideas for color schemes and decorations for a successful homecoming.

“We have to make sure we’re putting on something that is going to be fun, successful, and worth it for the student body,” SGA sponsor Ms. Sarah Milford said.

SGA also organizes a spirit week as part of the festivities. The spirit week gives students an opportunity to show their school pride by dressing in different themes each day. This year’s spirit week themes include: Monday – Superheroes and Villains Day, Tuesday -Twin Day, Wednesday -Neon Day, Thursday -Tacky Day, and Friday – Extreme Spirit Day.

Milford calls SGA “an organization that at its heart is a community and school service organization.” They work hard in a small time period to decide on ideas and set everything up.

The funding for homecoming is simple: each year pays for the next.

“Homecoming every year pays for homecoming the next year. We also do fundraisers throughout the year, but homecoming is our major moneymaker,” Milford said.  The tickets sold the previous year goes into a fund that is spent on decorations and everything for the next year.

“The students in SGA put in a ton of work, either making decorations, picking out decorations, or advertising,” Milford said.

Making Decisions: Vice President Edgar Esculta Chagoya listens to the final decision about the theme. The theme was voted on by all the members and announced by Ms. Milford. Photo by Ellie Crane.

“I joined SGA because it was an organization that plans events for cedar and gets involved in the community. I thought that was as good as a club could get,” SGA member Ella Johnson, freshman, said.

The homecoming dance will be held on Saturday, September 28 from 7 to 10 p.m in the cafeteria. Tickets will be sold during lunch, or before and after school in room B206. Tickets will not be sold at the dance to make sure there are enough supplies for everyone, so students are encouraged to purchase them beforehand.
