Lady Jags defeat Warriors, look ahead to postseason

The Cedar Shoals Lady Jaguars ended their regular season with a dominant performance over the Walnut Grove Lady Warriors with a final score of 74-15 last Friday Jan. 31.

With a 59 point margin, the Lady Jags improved their season record to 13-11 (6-3 region), seeded third in the region tournament behind undefeated Buford (10-0; region record) and Loganville (8-2; region record).

The Lady Jaguars will be competing in the 8-AAAAA region tournament for the third time in five years defeating Johnson (72-15) on Tuesday Feb. 4 and advancing to the next round. They intend on keeping the same intensity they displayed during their dominant performance throughout the tournament.

“Before the game we spent a lot of time working on being more communicative defensively and what we tried differently this game was doubling defensively and not allowing players before they could reach half court which helped produce a lot of turnovers,” junior Jada David said.

Along with being very visible defensively, the Lady Jaguar offense capitalized on turnovers and controlled the paint with quick passes.

“We played our game and at our own speed which made a difference and allowed us to get through their defense and make some easier uncontended shots,” junior Autumn Jones said. “This was really important for us because now that we know we can play competitively we need to take that into the [region] tournament.”

“We used the game to work on some things that we had run during practice,” said Coach Wall. “I hate to say this but we used this as a practice game.”

The Jags will go into the game against Johnson with a main focus on post play. The guard play will mainly come down to shots as it did against Walnut Grove with Jones, Deshauna Foote, David, and Ashley Lester combining for 46 points.

“Right now the guards are playing very well on both ends of the court”, said Coach Wall.” We feel like we have some of the best guards in the region which will really help us in trying to get to state.”
