Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!
Each year, Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) celebrates the histories, cultures, and achievements of Hispanic Americans in the United States. This month-long celebration begins with the recognition of five countries in Central America gaining independence from Spain such as Honduras and El Salvador. In addition, Mexico and Chile commemorate their independence on Sept. 16 and 18. All month long, let’s make sure to appreciate and recognize leaders, change-makers, and the history of Latino and Hispanic Americans locally and nationally.

Former President Donald Trump encounters his second assassination attempt
As investigation into the second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, which occurred on Sept. 15 at Trump International Golf Course located in Florida, new information is emerging. The latest details we know is the arrest of a suspect identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, a 58-year-old-man who is pro-Ukraine and has shown his support for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris continuously. Routh is in custody and is charged with the possession of a firearm while a convicted felon and the possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. During this incident, Trump was unharmed and had tweeted “THE JOB DONE WAS ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING.”

Pager explosions kill dozens and injure thousands
Over the course of two days, Pagers and Hand Held Radios exploded across Lebanon in a coordinated attack against Hezbollah, a militant political group backed by Iran. These attacks have killed at least 32 people overall, with thousands being injured. Hezbollah has blamed Israell for these attacks and has threatened retaliation against them. Israel has also launched missiles into Lebanon, possibly targeting senior members of Hezbollah.

Georgia officials request more school safety money after Apalachee High School shooting
After recents event in Apalachee High School, Georgia’s state-wide school superintendent, Richard Woods, says he wants the state to spend more money to ensure schools can have security officers and wearable panic alert buttons. In addition, Woods also said he wants to expand a mental health program for students and districts to better share details about threats. According to ABC News, Georgia Governor Brain Kemp said he will review any proposals.

East Side Library coming in 2026
On September 3, 2024, a meeting that included the Mayor and Commission approved the area 1030 Barnett Shoals Road as the future site for the East Side Library. This library will provide numerous resources including technology (computers,) meeting spaces and books. This development is expected to be completed at the end of 2026. More information can be found on the ACCGov website.
