Sophomore Sarah Fillingim chose the topic of failure and dealing with it.

“I feel like a lot of people struggle with failure and accepting it. I did a lot of research and I also kind of gambled with different words and stories I could use,” Fillingim said.

Through the project and class, Miller wants students to use their voice to change the things that are important to them.

“Students should take peer leadership to find their voice or to define and amplify that voice,” Miller said.

As Georgia continues on its march to the midterms, As Georgia continues on its march to the midterms, primary elections were held on May 19. Alongside the primaries were a variety of local and state races.

The Democratic primaries were relatively straightforward, with most major races being decided without a runoff. Former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms won the nomination for governor over a wide field of competitors, and Jon Ossoff was nominated unopposed for Senate.

On the Republican side, billionaire political newcomer Rick Jackson and Lt. Governor Burt Jones will continue onto a runoff for the governorship. The senate nomination will also head to a runoff, with U.S. Representative Mike Collins and former football coach Derek Dooley facing off.

On the nonpartisan side, liberal-backed challengers Miracle Rankin and Jen Jordan failed to upset incumbents Charles Bethel and Sarah Warren in the Georgia Supreme Court race.

The Athens mayoral race will head to a runoff between Tim Denson and Dexter Fisher. Some Athenians will also be able to vote in runoffs for county commission districts 5 and 9.

All runoffs will be held on June 16. Check online to see which races you are eligible to vote in and see your polling locations. To read more about the local races, including features on both mayoral runoff candidates, visit cedarblueprints.com.

Senior Wendy Flores-Vazquez has been a member of t Senior Wendy Flores-Vazquez has been a member of the BluePrints Magazine staff for two years, currently serving as social media coordinator. Through journalism, she has been able to strengthen her social skills.

“Journalism has obviously helped improve my writing skills but it has also helped me get out of my shell of shyness. When I first joined, I was struggling a lot with social anxiety, I feared starting conversations with people. Having to go up to people and interview them, it’s allowed me to be more confident in my communication and people skills and now having conversations with people come a lot easier to me,” Flores-Vazquez said.

Flores has also been involved in other Cedar Shoals organizations such as the Classic City Sound marching band, serving as one of its drum majors this year and book club. She has had to learn how to better manage her time to maintain this busy schedule.

“Learning how to balance those organizations along with journalism was quite a challenge, many times it resulted in all nighters, whether I was staying up to practice my conducting for marching band or editing the lighting of a photo until it was just right,” Flores-Vazquez said.

After high school, Flores plans to attend Brenau University and transfer to the University of Georgia.

“I plan to attend Brenau University for 2 years and then hopefully transfer to the University of Georgia. I plan to study Biology. In the future I hope to find a career as a forensic scientist,” Flores-Vazquez said.
