Lyft initiates a new initiative for voters on Election day
The taxi-replacement service Lyft announced it will be providing discounted rides, bikeshare and scooters on election day, aiming to increase transportation access to voters. Lyft plans to offer a 50% discount to customers by using the code VOTE24 on or before Nov. 5, which is only valid from 5:00 A.M to 10:00 P.M in every time zone. Additionally, Lyft has helped more than 3 million individuals to vote, according to a press release from Lyft.

Athens District Attorney debate on Oct. 22
Athens Classic. Inc. will be hosting a second debate for Athens district attorney candidates on Oct. 22 starting at 6:00 P.M. The debate will feature the two candidates who are running for district attorney in Athens and Oconee, current district attorney Deborah Gonzalez and independent candidate Kalki Yalamanchii. The debate will be held in the Drew Lecture Hall at the Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Services Building. The moderator is Tim Bryant, a former WGAU host and journalist from Cox Media Group. In addition, the event will be live streamed on WGAU Radio.

Famous star from One Direction Liam Payne dies at 31
The British singer-songwriter Liam Payne has died after falling from the third floor of his hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Payne was well known from being a former singer and songwriter for the boy band One Direction, formed in 2010. A call to 911 was made from the Casa Sur Palermo Hotel where Payne was staying. It’s not currently known if this 911 call was directly connected to Payne, however, according to Fox News.

Cleanup for Helene/Milton continues
Recovery efforts continue after Hurricanes Helene and Milton hit many states across the Southeast, leaving many states devastated with major losses to life and property. The Biden Administration has already sent out $1.8 billion in assistance for individuals, public assistance including fixing schools, bridges, and more. FEMA has approved over $911 million which includes $581 million in assistance for individuals. Many survivors have already received assistance funding. For example, more than $119 million has been distributed to 118,000 survivors in Georgia and $213 million for 71,000 survivors in Florida, according to a statement released by The White House.

Early Voting records broken in Georgia
As early voting begins in Georgia, over half a million people have already cast their ballots for the 2024 Presidential Election. Early voting records on Tuesday were broken as about 310,000 voters. Among these voters were Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday.

Georgia officials cannot count votes by hand, judge rules
A judge in Georgia has ruled that votes for the presidential election cannot be counted by hand. This ruling strikes down a rule made earlier this year that mandated that counties in Georgia had to hand count votes after voting closes on Nov. 5. This rule was considered controversial when it was put into place due to a lack of time to implement the rule.
