From August 19th to 22nd, hundreds of supporters and members of the Democratic Party met in Chicago to officially nominate Kamala Harris as the presidential candidate for the election in November. During the DNC, many prominent members of the democratic party, including former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, gave speeches in support of Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr, the nephew of former president John F. Kennedy, has dropped his independent bid for the presidency and has endorsed Republican candidate Donald Trump. Although he has suspended his bid, Wisconsin and Michigan have decided to not remove him from their ballots due to rules stating that independents can’t be removed from the ballots. Trump has also given Kennedy and former congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard a position on his transition team, which would help Trump transition into the presidency should he be elected.
17 days after the closing of the stunning yet controversial 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, the 2024 Paralympics officially began on August 28. The Paralympics are a parallel to the Olympics where athletes with a range of disabilities from all over the world compete in a variety of sports. The opening ceremony of the games included many performances and celebrations of the games, ending with the Paralympic cauldron being lit, symbolizing the start of the games. The games will run until September 8, and will be available to watch on NBC and Peacock.
The second largest diamond in recorded history has been found in a mine in Botswana. The diamond, which is almost 2500 carats, is the biggest diamond found since 1905 and is estimated to be worth millions of dollars. The Lucara Diamond Corporation, whose mining operations led to the diamond being discovered, credited advancements in technology to the discovery. The largest diamond to ever be discovered was the Cullinan Diamond, which was found in 1905 in South Africa and was over 3,000 carats.
On the early morning of August 19, a storm off the coast of the italian island of Sicily caused a superyacht to capsize and sink, killing seven people. Among the seven was British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his daughter, Hannah. Fifteen other people on the Yacht, including Mike Lynch’s wife, survived the sinking and were rescued. Although no definite reason for the sinking is known, theories range from a downburst hitting the ship to human error being the cause.
