Israel launches strikes on Hezbollah

On Sept. 24, Israel launched deadly strikes on Hezbollah, resulting in an estimated 558 deaths and 1,835 wounded according to Lebanese health authorities. Israel strikes reportedly hit southern and eastern parts of  Lebanon. As a result, More than 10,000 Lebanese citizens have fled from southern and eastern parts seeking for safety.  In addition, numerous people have stated this has been the deadliest day in Lebanon since the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war.

UGA 6 request suspensions, conduct violation and additional charges to be dropped 

On April 23, 2024, 16 students including students from UGA 6, a group of 6 students from the University of Georgia, were arrested during a pro-Palestine encampment demonstration protest that was held at Old College front lawn on North Campus. UGA charged the students with criminal trespassing and code of conduct violations. As a result, students were suspended. On Sept. 23, the UGA 6 held a press conference at the Georgia State Capitol building, requesting for their disciplinary charges to be dropped.

Judge finds DA Deborah Gonzalez violated Marsy’s Law for the fourth time in the last two years

Superior Court Judge Lawton Stephens ruled that the Western Circuit District Attorney’s office under Deborah Gonzalez violated the Crime Victims Bill of Rights, also known as Marsy’s Law, for the fourth time in two years. Based on the repeated violations, Stephens is requiring DA Gonzalez and her staff of assistant prosecutors to complete the Victims Bill of Rights course within 60 days. DA Gonzalez issued a statement the following day, admitting to violating Marsy’s Law. Gonzalez is once again running for the position of district attorney, she will face independent candidate Kalki Yalamanchili in the Nov. 5 general election for district attorney.

Hurricane Helene’s impact in Athens 

The aftermath of Hurricane Helene in Athens led to multiple road closures due to fallen trees, downed power lines and flooded areas. The highest winds, ranging from 35-50 MPH, reached Athens at around 4:00 AM, according to NOAA. On Friday morning, roads like GA-10 Loop were blocked from both directions between Oglethorpe Ave. and Atlanta Hwy., and there were more than 25 known road closures. Actress Maggie Smith dies at 89

Maggie Smith, a renowned British actress, has passed away at 89. Born in 1934, Smith began her acting career on the stage before moving into movies, starring in famous roles like Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey and Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter movies. No cause of death is currently known.
