Chemistry teacher Astrid Tarleton and her student Chemistry teacher Astrid Tarleton and her student created atom Bohr model ornaments for the classroom chemis’tree’ to celebrate the holiday season and end of the semester. A Bohr model is one way to show an atom's protons, neutrons, and electrons on different energy levels. “I got the inspiration to create a chemis’tree’ from my mentor Mary Lynn Zimpher,” Tarleton said. Two Cedar Shoals seniors, Delia McElhannon and Gen Two Cedar Shoals seniors, Delia McElhannon and Genesis Rodriguez, were accepted into Duke University with the QuestBridge scholarship. With Duke’s low acceptance rate of 6.3%, this was an achievement for both students. “I feel really good. I put in a lot of work and effort, and I’m really proud of all my achievements,” McElhannon said. The QuestBridge program matches students to partnering universities. The scholarship allows both students to attend Duke University with tuition and housing covered. McElhannon and Rodriguez were selected out of over 2,600 finalists. “Honestly, I was in shock for a few hours afterwards because I wasn’t expecting that at all,” Rodriguez said. The trio stepped onto the field for the last time of their high school career on Nov. 21. Although they have only been together for a couple months, Mack will feel the loss of the team. “I will miss the practices when we would scrimmage, water breaks, and flag pulling techniques,” Mack said. After their previous first meet of the year on Nov. 9 in Clarksville, freshman Van Thang reflected on his time with the Aqua Jags this season. “I did well at this meet and I like how supportive the team is.
