After long-time head coach Leroy Ryals was dismiss After long-time head coach Leroy Ryals was dismissed following a disappointing 0-10 season, Cedar Shoals has announced the hiring of Rusty Charpia as the new head football coach. "I am looking forward to the opportunity to coach the young men at Cedar Shoals High,” Charpia said in a press release. “I know of the rich football history from my former teammates at Clemson who played here. I can’t wait to get started toward making Jaguar football a championship program again." Though there were many promising candidates in the head coach hiring process, athletic director L’Dreco Thomas was particularly impressed with Charpia. “Coach Charpia separated himself from the rest with his football resume, his energy, and his passion for coaching kids. He has taken programs that were similar to where we are and built them into winners. His passion to build Cedar Shoals into a top program in Georgia was evident, and his plan to do so was clear,” Thomas said in a press release. Looking ahead to next season, junior defensive back Santana Moreau is looking forward to what Charpia will bring to the program. “I’m excited to see what he’s going to bring to the team and how he’s going to change us for the better. We’re going to lock in during the offseason and take lifting seriously,” Moreau said. Additionally, sophomore Mollie Osborne is excited to attend more football games next season and support the football team. “While coach Ryals was a funny guy and I’m sad to see him leave, I think it’ll be a good year to have a new coach so that our team can be better and bring more school spirit,” Osborne said. The Cedar Shoals varsity girls soccer team kicked The Cedar Shoals varsity girls soccer team kicked off their first home game of the 2025 season with a 4-3 comeback win against the Franklin County Lions on Feb. 11. The Lady Jags fell to an early 0-2 deficit before a hat-trick from junior striker Zulma Valdivieso-Gutierrez and a goal from freshman striker Tatiana Rodriguez Linares. The Lions clawed back from a second penalty kick after a handball was awarded in the box. Ultimately, the Jags closed out the game by defending tightly in the back. This was the first varsity start for several underclassmen; among those were sophomore outside back Nely Barrera. “I was really nervous, especially as I was walking onto the field. As soon as the game started those nerves went away because I knew I had my teammates with me. I was really happy when we won because it was a really enjoyable moment with all my teammates as it was the season opener,” Barrera said. Caption by Katie Kulik and Alyssa Weiszer. Organized by Cedar Shoals Beta Club, Red Cross wor Organized by Cedar Shoals Beta Club, Red Cross workers visited the Cedar Shoals library for the second time this school year on Feb. 7. Red Cross Supervisor Rodney Hamiltonhad worked at the blood drive on Oct. 18 and returned to the Shoals to take part again with a new team. He has spent 19 years drawing blood for the American Red Cross, but there’s an interesting aspect that allows him to connect with his patients. Despite his fear of needles, he persists through each day, relating to uncomfortable patients. He uses this experience to calm worried donors and provides them with the truth of the matter. “They are saving three lives, donating blood saves lives,” Hamilton said. This job allows Hamilton to help people all across Georgia donate, and provides him with a job. “It's been great. Traveling to different places every day. Meeting new and different people,” Hamilton said. “It’s a different team every day, so you’re never tired of working with the same team every day.” Caption by Sophie Meile. Over the past year, De’Treviunte Cooper, a Cedar Over the past year, De’Treviunte Cooper, a Cedar Shoals alumnus, has worked with Hilsman Middle School students and local artist Broderick Flanigan to commemorate the rich history of education, integration and the Black community on the East side in the form of a mural in Hilsman’s cafeteria. On Feb. 7 Hilsman hosted a reception to celebrate the unveiling of the East Side Integration Mural. Guests from across the community were invited to speak about the history of Black education in Athens. Speakers included Annie Matthews, Athens High and Industrial School Class of 1964, who spoke about the Historic Chestnut Grove Schoolhouse which she’s worked to preserve and Cedar Shoals alumnus Randy Watkins, who shared his experiences integrating into an all-white school and being one of Cedar’s first students. Hundreds of Athens residents and students from the Hundreds of Athens residents and students from the University of Georgia gathered together in downtown Athens on Feb. 6 to protest President Donald Trump and his administration's immigration policies. Demonstrators began the protest by marching from the Arch to Athens City Hall while carrying signs with a variety of messages in opposition to Trump’s immigration policies. “It was encouraging to see so many people out at the protest,” Kimberly Olvera, a freshman at Cedar Shoals High School, said. “It was a good experience to be able to use my voice to advocate for my loved ones.” Read more on our website, link in bio. The Cedar Shoals Rifle Team held their fourth matc The Cedar Shoals Rifle Team held their fourth match of the season against Clarke Central’s newly established team on Feb 4. Coming out with a victory against their rival school, the Jaguars also achieved their best score in the last four years. “I was really happy because we had finally broke (a score of) 1100 and I was also really happy because I finally broke my personal best,” senior and team captain Dariana Reyna said. School cancellations due to inclement weather meant that some matches had to be rescheduled. With sectionals in late February and semi-finals in early March, the Rifle team has crunched six matches into five days. “Right now we don’t really have breaks between matches. We're kind of just doing match, sleep, next day, we come back and it's another match. It's been really stressful, not just on me, but on the team as well,” Reyna said. “But the victory at Clarke Central has us all looking forward.” Caption and photos by Aislynn Chau
Records broken: Freshman Lauren Neace is the first Records broken: Freshman Lauren Neace is the first woman from Cedar Shoals to qualify for the state championship in 20 years. Neace qualified for five events: 500-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley. The state cut for the 500 free was 5:40.00, and Neace’s qualifying time was 5:33.93. The state cut for the 100 free was 58.50; Neace achieved a time of 56.42. The state cut for the 100 breast was 1:15.00, and Neace finished with a time of 1:12.27. The state cut for the 100 fly was 1:05.00, and Neace registered 1:01.58. The state cut for the 200 IM was 2:24.00; Neace reached the time of 2:21.22. “I am really proud of myself. It's not just because I made state but because I feel like in a way I’m representing my school, and I’m happy to represent my school as the first girl in decades.
