Supreme Court orders the return of mistakenly deported man

The Supreme Court has backed a ruling made by a Maryland judge to return Kilmar Ábrego García to the United States after his mistaken deportation. Last month, García was deported from the U.S. and sent to the Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT) in El Salvador, alleging that he was part of the MS-13 gang. However, despite statements by the government stating that his deportation was an “administrative error,” the Trump administration has said they will not seek to return him.

$2 Billion in Harvard Funding cut

The U.S. government has cut $2 billion in grants to Harvard.  This comes from demands by the Trump administration to update rules regarding protests at the campuses, among other demands to end programs seen as DEI-adjacent, which the school has resisted.  Harvard is one of many Ivy League schools to have these demands given to them, although Harvard is the only one to have resisted.

CCSD appoints new two new elementary principals

The Clarke County Board of Education appointed two new elementary school principals on April 17, 2025. The new principal at Barnett Shoals Elementary School will be Sabrina Lumpkin, effective July 1. The new principal at Whitehead Road Elementary School is Bylan Swift, effective immediately. In addition, the Board of Education also appointed Dan Swartz as the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, effective immediately. Find more information about Lumpkin, Swift, and Swartz here

First footage of colossal squid filmed

Scientists have recorded the first footage of the colossal squid using a remotely operated underwater vehicle. The footage shows an infant squid, around 11 inches long.  The colossal squid was first recorded in 1925 and is the heaviest invertebrate in the world.  Adult squids can reach up to 45 feet in length.

Possible signs of life found on distant planet

Scientists have found evidence of gasses that are usually produced by microorganisms in the atmosphere of a distant planet. The planet, K2-18b, is located 124 light years from Earth and was first discovered in 2017. Elements in the atmosphere were discovered using the James Webb Telescope, which launched in 2021. Scientists will continue to do more research on these discoveries to see if this is a sign that life exists on the planet.
