Trump, Hegseth call address of military officers
U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and President Donald Trump addressed hundreds of top military officers in a rare meeting at a Marine Corp base in Quantico, Virginia. The meeting, which was first called last week, discussed new standards for military training and appearance. In his speech, he claimed that the Department of War (formerly the Department of Defense) had become the “Woke Department,” and called the previous leadership toxic. Trump followed up Hegseth’s speech by saying that he discussed using American cities as possible training grounds for National Guard Troops.

EA goes private, bought out by private investors
Electronic Arts (EA), one of the largest video game companies in the world, has been acquired by three separate entities: Affinity Partners, Silver Lake Partners and Saudi Arabia’s Sovereign Wealth Fund. The acquisition followed the announcement of it becoming a private company. The buyout amounts to $52.5 billion, with each EA shareholder receiving $210 dollars per share. Before it can progress any further, the deal requires the approval from the Committee of Foreign Investments.

U.S. Government shuts down after failure to pass legislation
The U.S. Government has shut down after Congress failed to pass legislation to continue funding. The U.S. government shuts down whenever funding for the government is unable to be renewed. This can impact services like social security and leave thousands of government employees without pay. Both Democrats and Republicans have blamed each other for the shutdown and a banner on the official White House website reads “Democrats have shut down the government.”

Athens transit imposes challenge onto residents
This week is the national Week Without Driving. From Sept. 29-Oct. 5, drivers are encouraged to abstain from using their vehicles, and travel by public transportation or bus. Almost a third of Americans cannot or do not drive for multiple reasons, such as age, physical disabilities or injury. Public transportation is a very valuable resource to these people, but it does have its downsides. This event is designed to give people the experience of what it is like to go through a daily routine without driving.

Death of Jane Goodall
Jane Goodall was an English primatologist and anthropologist who made significant contributions to the study of chimpanzees and the understanding of apes. She passed away at the age of 91. Goodall passed on Wednesday, Oct. 1 while on speaking tour in Los Angeles. She discovered how chimps raise their young, establish leadership and how they socialize and communicate.
