Two Cedar Shoals students place in Martin Luther King Jr. Writing & Art Contest

Clarke County School District announced the 2025-26 winners of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Writing & Art Contest on Nov. 6. This year’s theme was “My Dream: Our Future.” Out of the 30 district winners, two of those were Cedar Shoals High School students.

Sophomore Sarah Hodges earned first place for high school art. Her submission was a collage based on the quote, “You can kill the dreamer but not the dream.”

“The collage was my interpretation of the theme by connecting the past and Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy to the present battles we continue to fight,” Hodges said.

Junior Katie Kuilk placed second in for high school writing. Kuilk’s submission was titled “Constellations of tomorrow.” She says the meaning behind it was about having hope that the future will be brighter and better when we work together.

These two Cedar students will be recognized at the CCSD Board of Education meeting on Nov. 12 and will be featured in a video that will be presented at the University of Georgia annual MLK Freedom Breakfast, which is scheduled for Jan. 16, 2026 at the Tate Student Center Grand Hall.
