O@TS: PBIS initiative
Positive Behaviors Interventions and Support (PBIS) strives to help support a positive culture and climate within the school by using incentives that reward students. After laying the groundwork during the 2023-24 school year, Cedar Shoals High School revamped PBIS within their own halls.
PBIS at Cedar Shoals High School is managed by Angela Gay, a social worker at CCSD, and Kizzy Wingfield, a mental health counselor at Cedar Shoals. Both are involved in creating a positive environment.
“Although Ms. Wingfield and I are very involved in PBIS at Cedar, we do have a whole team of staff and teachers that help us plan for these events,” Gay said. “We also have a PBIS student committee that gives us advice and a new perspective of this reward system.”
The PBIS Student Committee helps develop ideas to reward students, like what to include in the Cedar Shoals Jag shop, and plans alongside the staff.
“Compared to last year they have events that get us more involved, and I hope that they continue to have events that are activity based,” junior Rosibel Barcenes said.
Spotlight points, a reward system organized by PBIS initiative where staff give points to students, have been implemented to excite students to improve. Students use their points at the Jag shop to trade the received points for a variety of options like school merch or toys.
“These spotlight points have become popular with the students, but the teachers and staff are also eager to hand out the points as well,” Wingfield said.
