Winter Olympics start in Italy

The 2026 Winter Olympics have begun in the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina. The opening ceremonies took place Feb. 6. The games will have many winter sports, such as skiing and curling. The games will also introduce a new sport in ski mountaineering. The U.S. team, as of Feb. 12, has 13 medals, with four gold. Norway is currently in the lead with 14 medals total, with seven gold.  The games will last until Feb. 22, when the closing ceremony will take place.

Seattle Seahawks win Super Bowl, Bad Bunny performance at Halftime

On Feb. 8, the Seattle Seahawks beat the New England Patriots 29-13 to win Super Bowl LX. The game was hard fought with Bad Bunny performing at halftime. The show included a real couple getting legally married on the set. The show itself consisted of Bad Bunny walking through a set of the Puerto Rican streets, eventually ending with him pushing forward with various flags including Puerto Rico, the United States, Mexico, and other Latin American countries. The show’s ultimate message was one of togetherness and brotherhood. Afterwards the Seahawks defense was nearly impenetrable as MVP Sam Darnold along with wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba carried the team to victory.

U.S. – Russia Nuclear Treaty expires

The New START treaty, a treaty between the United States and Russia created to put verifiable limits on all Russian deployed Intercontinental Nuclear Missiles, has been extended through Feb. 6, 2026. The treaty originally took effect Feb. 5, 2011 and limits the amount of nuclear weapons each power can have. The limits are as follows: No more than 700 deployed intercontinental ballistic missiles and submarine launched ballistic missiles, no more than 1,550 deployed nuclear warheads and no more than 800 deployed ICBMS and SLBMs. All of these limits were required to be met by Feb. 5 2018. These limits are required to be upheld for as long as possible.

Nancy Guthrie, mother of “Today” Show host, kidnapped

A large-scale search has begun after Nancy Guthrie, the mother of “Today Show” host Savannah Guthrie, went missing from her home. Guthrie, who is 87 and uses a pacemaker, was reported missing Feb. 1. Over the course of the investigation, traces of blood were found on her driveway, and photos and videos of a suspect in the case have been released which were taken from a Ring Camera. On Feb. 10, a man was detained by police in connection with the case but was later released.

“Virginia’s Law” bill introduced to US Capitol

A new bill has been introduced to Congress named “Virginia’s Law.” The bill, should it pass and become law, will remove the statute of limitations in cases of sexual abuse. The law is named after Virginia Giuffre, a victim of the late convicted sex offender Jeffery Epstein, who took her own life in 2025. Congressmen introduced the bill alongside other victims of Epstein.  It is unknown if and when the bill will be voted on by Congress.
