Donald Trump invokes Alien Enemies Act
U.S. President Donald Trump invoked the Alien Enemies Act on March 26 in a public proclamation. The act was enacted in 1798, aiming to combat spying and sabotage. This act allows the president to deport, detain, or place restrictions on individuals whose primary allegiance is to a foreign power and who might pose a national security risk in wartime. Additionally, the act states it can be invoked whenever there is a declared war or any invasion or warlike attacks that has been committed, attempted, or threatened against the U.S. by a foreign government.

U-Lead to host DREAMFest
U-Lead Athens will be holding its annual festival DREAMFest on March 29. Every year, the organization hosts an annual fundraising event to raise money to be able to provide scholarships to undocumented students or students from immigrant families.There will be presentations, raffles, food, activities, and much more at this year’s event. DREAMFest will be held at Heard Park 400 McKinley Drive Athens, GA from 12 PM to 5 PM. More information can be found here.

Harvard expands financial aid
Harvard University announced on March 17 that starting in the 2025-26 school year undergraduate tuition will be completely free for students from families making $100,000 or less. This will cover expenses including tuition, housing, health insurance, and travel costs. Additionally, tuition will be free for students from families making $200,000 or less. Eligible students can also receive a $2,000 start-up grant in their first year and a $2,000 launch grant during their junior year, aiming to help low-income students meet post-Harvard challenges.

Donald Trump to begin dismantlement of Department of Education
U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday to begin the dismantlement and eventual closure of the Department of Education. The DOE mainly focuses on helping and funding public schools and student aid programs across the country. Many of these programs, like Title I, affect students within Clarke County. The DOE cannot fully be shut down without congressional approval, so it is unknown what will happen at this time.

Astronauts stuck in space return to earth
Two astronauts who have been stranded on the International Space Station since June of 2024 have returned to earth. The two astronauts, Suni Williams and Butch Willmore, were sent to the ISS on a Boeing spacecraft for an 8 day trip. However, due to mechanical problems and delays, it would take nine months until they returned to earth in a SpaceX dragon capsule. The return trip to earth lasted around 17 hours, with the capsule landing in the waters off the coast of Florida.
