Review: Man’s Best Friend

Sabrina Carpenter announced her seventh studio album “Man’s Best Friend,” on June 11, 2025 via instagram post, igniting fans to countdown the days until its release on Aug. 29. This announcement came shortly after the release of the album’s first track “Manchild,” on June 3.

Not only does “Man’s Best Friend,” provide a variety of pop styles, but she also incorporates elements of past decades’ music into this album.

An example of this is the final track “Goodbye,” which features an array of different horn and string instruments. Accompanying the backtrack, Carpenter includes vocal harmonies reminiscent of 1970’s disco band ABBA and their iconic sound.

Listeners also get to live the 80’s on tracks like “House Tour,”, which has an up-beat synth-pop sound, and “Manchild,” with similar synths but a slower beat.

Carpenter is well-known for her vulgar and mocking lyrics. Through both her interviews and her art, she continues to be unapologetically herself. This album continues to capture her ever-present disdain for the way men treat women.

For example, in the second track “Tears,” Carpenter writes, “A little respect for women can get you very very far, remembering how to use your phone gets me oh so hot, offering to do anything I’m like ‘oh my god’.”

By creating music about her personal experiences with men, she welcomes the raw emotion of her fans. Her blunt words are then enveloped in her humor and comedic tone, often commenting on the poor treatment women receive from men.

Along with the album, Carpenter released a music video for “Tears.” Going along perfectly with Carpenter’s brand of funny, suggestive and a bit chaotic, the “Tears” video shows Carpenter stumbling across a lone house after a car crash, singing and dancing her way through the house along with Colmen Domingo. Dressed in drag, he takes Carpenter through all the different rooms of the house, with other characters in drag makeup and costumes, a nod to the 1975 movie “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” After getting thrown out of the house, in true Carpenter fashion, Sabrina throws a shoe at her boyfriend to “give the fans what they want” to follow her tradition of killing at least one guy per video.

All in all, Carpenter meets her fans’ expectations with “Man’s Best Friend.” From the upbeat and danceable “House Tour,” and “Go-go Juice,” to the slower songs like “Never Getting Laid,” and “We Almost Broke Up Again Last Night,”, “Man’s Best Friend” is full of great lyricism and musical brilliance.
