The Cedar Shoals math team had their first math co The Cedar Shoals math team had their first math contest on Oct. 21, facing schools from all across the state. Participating students get 30 minutes to solve six different questions with a maximum point total of 30. Cedar earned 16 points.

The top scoring students include senior Christopher Koch, junior Spencer Broome, senior Ella Conway and sophomore Charles Neely Etheridge. Other high scoring students included junior Savannah Rawls, junior Devyn Capuozzo, freshman Jose Melendez and junior Boone Patterson.

Math team adviser Logan Garrett, believes that this team helps students with not only math but also helps them with their problem solving skills.

“The goal of the math team is to keep kids excited in math and to keep that problem solving alive. Because I think a lot of times in math class it can feel like ‘am I doing this the way the teacher wants me to be or the way the question is supposed to be?’ But most of the questions in these competitions can be done in a variety of ways. So it helps students have a challenge of problem solving,” Garrett said.

The annual homecoming dance took place on Saturday The annual homecoming dance took place on Saturday Oct. 4 in the Cedar Shoals cafeteria. The theme of the dance was “once upon a time”, and students planned their outfits around their favorite princesses, princes or fairy tales.

Senior Emma Van Cantfort Carpenter thinks the Student Government Association (SGA) organized and planned very well and she believes the dance created a magical night for all in attendance.

“I believe that the decor being better and more intentional, added to the magic of the night. This homecoming being one of my last ones and getting to party with all of my friends was really special and it was a magic night,” Van Cantfort said.

Junior outside hitter and libero Kaitlyn Paige ear Junior outside hitter and libero Kaitlyn Paige earned second team All-Region honors at North Oconee High School during the region tournament. Head coach Ka’lah Paige praises Kaitlyn for her consistency and her drive for the sport.

“Kaitlyn is one of those athletes that shows up every day on time. She always asks to get extra time in the gym, goes the extra mile as far as leading and encouraging her peers. She’s always able to correct her mistakes and as an athlete she’s a standout. She’s always communicating, has great energy and even when she’s in one of those funks, she’s able to correct it,” Paige said.

Freshman setter Eilee Swindler and outside hitter Reese Pepin were All-Region honorable mentions. Paige is proud of the young players in the volleyball program and has high hopes for the future teams.

“I felt excited for them in their overall future here at Cedar shows and within the volleyball program, they’re both bright, individual young ladies, very talented, very hard working, and that was just able to show throughout the season. So super excited to see what they’re going to continue to do,” Paige said.

Student Government Association organized a pep ral Student Government Association organized a pep rally on Oct. 3 to show school spirit for the homecoming dance on Oct. 4. Students played a variety of games including tug of war, musical chairs and a chain relay race. The school also cheered on all of the fall sports teams as well as recognizing homecoming court and SGA members.

Senior Derriana Smith helped with announcing and organizing the event for the school. Smith believes the pep rally showed off school spirit and was a great lead up to homecoming weekend.

“The pep rally showed school spirit because we got to see everyone cheer for each other. From the athletes running out, to the recognition of the SGA team, and even from people cheering for their friends in the games, it seemed everyone that day was showing school spirit,” Smith said.

At the first Mental Wellness Youth Advisory Counci At the first Mental Wellness Youth Advisory Council meeting yesterday, students had pizza and refreshments while mental health counselors Kennedi Goodwin and Kizzy Wingfield presented the council’s goals and responsibilities.

“The purpose of this is to increase awareness, challenge stigmas and foster mental wellness through student-led advocacy and educational mental health,” Wingfield said. “We want to make sure it's student-led, so they can help us get the word out as well. It's just not us staff, teachers and counselors, but being able to hear that peer support as well.”

Students created their own guidelines for the group, which include keeping confidentiality and creating a space free of judgment. Freshman Ragen Watkins hopes to not only promote mental wellness throughout the school but to also learn how to preserve her own mental health.

“I've been around people that haven't had the best mental health and they never found a way to get better with it. So I'm hoping I don't find myself in a situation like that, and if I do, I can find a way to get out of it,” Watkins said.
