Linda Phillips founded Nuçi’s Space on Sept. 20, 2 Linda Phillips founded Nuçi’s Space on Sept. 20, 2000 to commemorate her son, Nuçi Phillips after he took his own life. Since then, the organization has sought to prevent suicide, especially among musicians, and reduce the stigma surrounding the topic of mental health. 25 years later, Nuçi’s Space will celebrate their anniversary with a benefit concert on Dec. 12 at 7:30 pm at the Georgia Theater.

Nuçi’s Space has become a pillar Athens music community, with their various youth programs such as Camp Amped and their services for Athens musicians like rehearsal and recording studios as well as rental instruments.

For their 25th anniversary Nuçi’s Space has partnered with Condor Chocolates to create a limited edition chocolate bar. The benefit concert will feature performances from 11 bands and artists: Patterson Hood, David Barbe, Kyshona, Modern Skirts, Claire Campbell, Willow Avalon, Annie Leeth, Elf Power, The Cut-Outs House band, Faye Webster and Kevn Kinney. All of the performers have connections with Nuçi’s Space or Athens in some way, chosen to showcase the culture of music in Athens.

BluePrints staff attended the JEA/NSPA National Hi BluePrints staff attended the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention in Nashville Nov. 13-16. Staff members attended different sessions and critiques on the group’s first ever trip to a national convention. Senior Co-Editor-in-Chief Lilly Cohen thought that the conference was a way to bond with the staff while also learning about new things to bring back to the publication.

“It was a good opportunity to be with our staff in a setting other than the classroom and I feel like we all had fun being in the convention center. Also, seeing how other schools from across the country run their publications was eye opening and it broke this sort of bubble we’re in,” Cohen said.

The first home meet of the year for the Aqua Jags The first home meet of the year for the Aqua Jags on Nov. 8 resulted positively with six state cuts: two from sophomore Lauren Neace, two from senior Christopher Koch and two from the boys A-team relay consisting of sophomore Van Thang, junior Nate Guidry, senior Ben Graichen and Koch. The meet also resulted in the boys team getting fourth place, girls receiving eighth place and the overall team earning seventh place out of 11 teams.

While this meet resulted in a positive score, it also started a new season. The Jags participated not only in the swim meet but also the diving competition for the first time with freshman Zackary Green. Head coach Bee Nordgren believes that having a diver on the team creates a new aspect to the team.

“Finally having a diver on our team has a positive effect on them because it adds to the diversity and dimension to the team,” Nordgren said.

The Cedar Shoals Jaguar varsity flag football team The Cedar Shoals Jaguar varsity flag football team faced off against the Oconee Warriors and the Athens Academy Spartans on Nov. 4. The Jaguars suffered a tough loss against the Warriors 28-0. The loss made them play harder against the Spartans, who the Jaguars defeated 19-0.

Sophomore quarterback Riley Freeman believes that changing the way they played against Oconee helped drive home the win against Athens Academy.

“As a team we didn’t put up a single point in that game so going into the next game I wanted to make sure it didn’t end the same way. We needed to be more aggressive on defense and have better communication. After fixing those things we definitely played a different game,” Freeman said.

The Cedar Shoals tennis team held tryouts for the The Cedar Shoals tennis team held tryouts for the first time last week, cutting eight students. Leading up to this year, everyone who showed up made the team. Head coach Chris Bartlett decided to limit the number of players on each team to 11 because he is the only coach, so he can better attend to a smaller team.

Sophomore Judah Caplan thinks tryouts add a different level of competition and will help pull the best out of the player pool.

“Having tryouts absolutely made the team more competitive. It definitely helped strengthen the team and also proved who could handle pressure,” Caplan said.

The Cedar Shoals library hosted a Maker Space Mond The Cedar Shoals library hosted a Maker Space Monday button making event focused around poetry button making for Black History Month. The station was set up with markers, poems and paper for students to construct pins to decorate their clothes and bags. Due to the weather, the most recent Makerspace event was held on Feb. 2 upon returning to school after the snowday.

“We decided to commit to doing a monthly maker Monday where we chose a craft or had students lead the craft, or have a student business leader come and do something with their skills,” media specialist Megan Ogden said.

Ogen began organizing Makerspace events because this area in the library was rarely being used.

“Our MakerSpace was not really getting utilized for makery things. It was just a space, and honestly, it had been used for storage during the renovation. So we wanted to revive our maker space and make sure that students were being creative in that space,”Ogden said.

The University of Georgia Gymdogs defeated Auburn The University of Georgia Gymdogs defeated Auburn Tigers 197.550-196.050 on Feb. 1. The Gymdogs had high scores around, with multiple 9.950s and 9.975s. Overall UGA had the higher score in vault, with a 49.475, bars with a 49.300, and floor at 49.600.

Much of UGA’s success came from focusing on the details in practice, according to junior Ady Wahl.

“In the gym I focused on making my routines look sharp and clean. At this point in the season it is all about the details, so we have really been honing in on that at practice,” Wahl said.

Cedar Shoals High School students joined others fr Cedar Shoals High School students joined others from over 100 high schools across Georgia as they walked out on Jan. 30 to protest against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Three days prior to the walkout, posts began to circulate on Instagram about the upcoming protest. According to the posts, the plan called for students to exit the school and protest down Cedar Shoals Drive towards Gaines School Road. However, the school’s designated place for the walkout was at the Waters-Wilkins Stadium. Principal Makeba Clark says that having the walkout limited to an on-campus location keeps students safe.

“We want (students) to understand that we’re not trying to restrict them in the protest, but our top priority is safety, so that’s why it’s so important for them to go to the designated location. It will be the same if you’re out in the community, if you protest downtown, you have to have a permit,” Clark said.

The Cedar Shoals High School Dynamic Remotely Oper The Cedar Shoals High School Dynamic Remotely Operated Navigation Equipment (DRONE) team hopes to become a winning team in their first year. With some prior experience, expert help, frequent practice and brand new drone equipment purchased with a $5,000 grant, that goal seems within reach.

The team has exceeded its own expectations thus far. Master Sergeant David Croft would like to see this team perform in the state championship, and believes their good form will take them there.

“We did real good on our first competition. There were six other teams at the first competition, and we did well. Nobody could believe it was our first year, not even our first year, our first month,” Croft said.
