Head of Church of England resigns amidst controversy

Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the leader of the Church of England, has resigned following backlash on the handling of an abuse case within the church. Welby resigned from his position after a report into the actions of John Smyth was released.  No replacement has been decided.

ACC Mayor and Commission review the negative effects of $250 million quarry 

The Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commissioners met on Nov. 12 to discuss the plans to store water in the east side Rock Hill Quarry and heard a presentation on a water supply project that may cost Clarke County $250 million dollars. The county brought the quarry in 2020, aiming to use it to increase water resiliency after the county faced droughts in 2007, 2012, and 2016. 

Republicans win House and Senate

Republicans have won the majority of seats to control the U.S. House of Representatives. The Associated Press news agency announced that Republicans had won 218 seats, while Democrats had 208 seats. Republicans also gained enough seats to control the U.S. Senate with 52 seats. More information about the 2024 General Election race results can be found here.

Donald Trump’s new administration 

President elect Donald Trump will be sworn in as president on Jan. 20, 2025, as specified by the Constitution 20th Amendment. Trump has started selecting his cabinet and government officials for his administration. Trump has already appointed Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy as heads of a new Department of Government Efficiency, Marco Rubio as Secretary of State, Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense, and Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security. Additionally, Trump must appoint about 4,000 officials including the secretaries of the 15 executive departments that make the U.S. cabinet. Alex Jones’s Infowars bought by The Onion

Infowars has been auctioned off and bought by The Onion, a popular parody news website.  Infowars was created by Alex Jones, a popular right-wing conspiracy theorist, in 1999. Jones was sued by family members of victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook School Shooting, who he had claimed were faking the tragedy.  The Onion has claimed it will turn the website and podcast into a parody brand.
