Cedar takes down the Comets
The Cedar Shoals High School flag football team faced off against the South Gwinnett High School team at Waters-Wilkins stadium on Oct. 14. The Jaguars came out on top with a 2-0 sweep against the Comets with a 19-4 win in the first game and a 13-0 win in the second game
Sophomore quarterback and free safety Riley Freeman was a big contributor to the game having 2 touchdowns. Freeman believes that she didn’t play to her full potential because of her recent groin injury in the previous game against Lanier
“I kind of held back because I just got injured in the last game, so after I get better, I can perform better,” Freeman said.
Varsity flag football head coach Shaquille Gatlin believes that the team still has room for improvement despite their wins.
“I think we left out a couple points on offense. We left a couple points out there dealing with penalties or dropped balls or bad snaps. Defensively, I think we should still be working on the fundamentals, watching the flag pulling, taking away sideline, and pursuing the ball,” Gatlin said.
Freeman believes that one of the reasons the team hasn’t competed to the best of their ability is their lack of communication with coaches when things aren’t clicking on the field.
“I feel like we could take criticism better, like communicating to the coaches when we don’t understand specific things,” Freeman said.
Gatlin believes that the coaches have to be in the right mindset to take the team to the next level.
“Keeping the mindset of getting better, there’s no I in team, there’s no I in me. I’m always willing to watch the film and get better. I want to put my players in the right position to win,” Gatlin said.
The Jaguars are now 6-1 on the season and are looking forward to an away matchup against Columbus High School on Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m.
